Making a difference to young peoples lives in a community arts/recreation context

CULTURAL RIGHTS

April15

For my artist self, in years past I could feel the incongruence between the values of my society and the need for the development of inner worlds of wisdom that would support greater social health and well-being. The Western drive for artistic ‘excellence’ sat in stark contrast to a global culture of inequality and social and environmental disrepair. Working with promoting indigenous cultural heritage in the colonised, “under-developed” country of Guatemala challenged the Western values of ‘progress’ I knew, thus creating the passion and commitment to place my artistic practice in an empowering community development context. This shift empowered me as it made my cultural work vital and congruent with my inner wisdom.

Given this global conscience my working method is influenced by cultural rights, human rights and environmental rights.
